A Note from the Director-- September 2010

Greetings,

I hope everyone enjoyed and took advantage of our summer activities such as the outdoor pools, Super Day, Summer Camp and Summer Reading program. It’s time to gear up for the next school year with lots of exciting Fall events and changes happening around town.

We have a few special events going on in September.

To celebrate National Kids Day on 18 September, the Child, Youth and School Service is hosting a Fall Festival for all DOD ID card holders and their Families. This is a free event from 1300 to 1600 and held at the Youth Center. There will be face painting, crafts, food and games. For more information call 878-4025.

We are hosting the annual Soldier Show at Jacob’s Theater on 28 September at 1900 and 29 September at 1400 and 1900.  The event is free to the public and this year’s theme is "Soldier Show v.27.1”, representing the 27th consecutive annual show of the modern era.  Please come out and show support to these talented Soldiers.

Join us on 1 October for Oktoberfest. There will be an appetizing German menu, a Keg Tapping Ceremony and live performances by "The Happy Dutchmen”.  There will be a large Oktoberfest entertainment tent with traditional faire of bratwursts, chicken, pommes, beer and all the trimmings of an authentic Fest event. The Fest will be held adjacent to the FMWR Community Center parking lot Building 671.

Autumn brings football season and the ITT office has the latest Military deals on sporting events such as the Washington Redskins or the Army vs. Navy football game. Please contact the ITT office for ticket availability as they are limited. Can’t catch a live game? Visit one of our many locations, The Pines Golf Course, Bowling Center or the Recreation Center for high-definition action on our flat screen TVs. Look for a new and exciting Sports Bar coming to Brookwood, with Monday Night Football, weekend college games, breakfast specials, Texas Hold'em, and specialty food evenings.

The FMWR Warehouse is planning a Property Sale with unbeatable deals on used vehicles and various items. Active Duty Soldiers will have first priority to take advantage of these deals. More information will be posted on the web at a later date.

After much preparation and planning, on 1 October, we will become the 733d Mission Support Group, Force Support Division, Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE). We anticipate no significant changes with this merge and will be able to add even more programs for our customers. Welcome to our Air Force brethren located at Langley.

Please be advised that for the first time in six years, the Department of Defense has introduced new child care fees. Letters have gone out to parents notifying them of all of the changes.  If you have any questions, please contact Central Registration at 878-4025.

It’s back to school time. Krissy Gomez, former SKIES Director and Parent to Parent Educator, has been appointed the new Fort Eustis School Liaison Officer. Parents, if you have any questions regarding educational issues involving military children, please contact her at the Fort Eustis School Liaison Office at 878-2662. She works closely with the military and local community to provide families assistance with issues concerning student transition. Have an enjoyable school year.

Don't forget to bookmark the Fort Eustis FMWR website, to be on top of all the latest deals and events. Plan a family night to one of our many September special events or recreational facilities. We are here to serve all Soldiers, Airmen and Families of JBLE. Thank you for all you do.

Regards,
John Volkers
